Background

The well-known IWA Water Balance analysis is part of the reporting of the SA Water Utilities related to the “No-drop” initiative and compliance driven by the Department of Water Affairs. However, the traditional Water Balance analysis can take quite some time and data collection efforts to be performed properly.

With the new online Water Balance Application (which is being developed in partnership with eThekwini Water and Sanitation), integrated as part of the HydroNET platform, this process will be much easier.

The Water Balance analysis will no longer be a magic trick with a lot of numbers. Based on the data available in existing systems such as GIS , customer billing data and data measurements from SCADA system, the values will be collected automatically and the water balance is available as soon as new data is available, e.g. on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis. New automated reporting tools will also be integrated with this application.

Technology

HydroNET is Software as a Service solution that supports professionals in the water and environmental sectors to manage their water systems and to improve the resilience of the systems in all weather conditions knowing that the climate is changing. More than 650 water professionals from 125 organisations regularly use the HydroNET solution for their water and environmental problems.

The HydroNET platform: connects the user to all available data sources in real-time, combines the data and displays them on personal, user-friendly dashboards and enables water managers to make effective decisions by providing smart water apps which timely enhance insight and understanding of their systems.

We access other parties’ data via web services and so do not need to copy them. That keeps data as close as possible to the source, where validation is performed in, for example, FEWS, Wiski, and various suppliers’ telemetry systems.

Status & Feedback

The showcase has started and is expected to be concluded in the second half of 2014.

The development of the Water Balance Application has started and within the month of June, a full functional demo application will be developed.

Until September 2014 the live connection to the existing systems will be finalised, including the HydroView application with data of the water storage reservoirs and pollution measurements.

Results

The aim of this showcase is to show a mockup of the water balance application for the eThekwini staff with the possibility to generate and download charts and reports from the web-application is very helpful to the NRW-branch.

As the application is tuned towards the requirements for the “No-drop” initiative it will reduce the effort for NWR compliance, reporting, benchmarking and information sharing.

Other possibilities to develop additional applications as part of the HydroNET platform have been investigated and will be developed in the (near) future.

Training

Training is anticipated to be available early 2015.
