EventLabThe use of innovative optical biosensor technology for both online and sample based water quality monitoring and real-time detection of contaminants in water.

In this showcase we aim to demonstrate and validate the Optiqua EventLab online water quality monitoring system for the specific requirements of the water distribution network of eThekwini Municipality.

Background

Drinking water quality is strictly regulated by national standards during production. Water quality in the distribution network, however, is only measured by grab sampling every fortnight and at a limited number of locations. As a result the distribution network is a black box in terms of water quality.

Online water quality monitoring in the distribution network is important, as on average30-60% of water quality incidents occur there. The use of online quality monitoring allows rapid detection and localisation of quality events.

With the help of online sensors, corrective actions can be taken and it will be possible to improve inspection and maintenance planning.

Technology

Optiqua EventLab is a generic optical sensor concept that measures minute refractive index changes in water using an integrated optical chip. Refractive Index (RI) is a useful generic indicator of water quality as any substance, when dissolved in water, will change the refractive index of the water matrix.

In EventLab, the chip is packaged in a probe which is operated in a flow through cell, using a pressure regulator and flow meter to establish a constant pressure and flow rate over the sensor surface.

EventLab measures refractive index changes of the water matrix without the use of chemicals or other consumables. The sensors are supported by Optiqua’s proprietary web-based software, EventLab Online. EventLab Online provides real time alerting on water quality changes, an overview over the network of EventLab sensors and their status as well as detailed information per individual sensor unit.

All EventLab sensor units transmit their data via a GPRS modem (across commercial telephone networks) to the designated Optiqua databases and servers.

The showcase is expected to start in the second half of 2014.
